Small Christian Community

What is a Small Christian Community?

Small Christian communities (SCCs) are gatherings of Christians who come together regularly to pray, to share their human stories and their faith with one another, to read the scriptures together, and to seek ways to respond to God's presence in their lives and in the world. They often meet in one another's homes. There may be five or six people, or ten or twelve, and the types of people who belong reflect the wider body of God's people - parents, children, singles, grandparents, teenagers, working and retired people, priests, religious sisters and brothers - in short, "the body of Christ." The members know one another personally. They offer support to one another. They are usually active in their parish community, and they seek to respond to the needs of people in the wider community.

Why do Small Christian Communities exist?

  • For mutual support
  • For on-going learning and formation in faith
  • For reflection on scripture and church teaching and discernment of gospel responses appropriate to the concrete situations of life
  • For encouragement and accountability of action on behalf of the gospel
  • For prayer and worship

A small Christian Community:

  • Is a place to enhance one's personal spirituality
  • Is a safe place to discuss sensitive issues and receive prayer regarding them
  • Is a support system in times of trial and crises
  • Is an extended family of brothers and sisters-in-Christ
  • Provides a sense of community and belonging
  • Provides prayer support for the family, the parish and the community
  • Is an example to others of Christian life
  • Contributes to the parish family
  • Connects future generations
  • Can serve as Christ's hands and feet in a hurting world
